Optoma HD142x – High-Quality Image with 3D Support for Home Theaters

Optoma HD142x

The Optoma HD142x is a budget-friendly home theater unit that ensures a seamless watching experience in the room or the backyard but lacks lumens output for large parties and business events. This model is noticeable for its quiet work and compatibility with various desktop and mobile devices.

Setup

The Optoma projector HD142x has front and rear table, front and rear ceiling projection methods. One can find these options in the setup sub-menu. The mounting holes at the bottom of the projector need three M4 screws with a minimum length of 10 mm to install the unit on the ceiling. The distance of projection depends on the screen size. For example, the 5-feet distance is compatible with the 45-inch screen size.

The item has 2 HDMI ports, and one of them allows a direct connection with tablets and smartphones. Generally, it’s possible to hook up any HDMI-compatible source of the video signal with 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p (laptop, DVD, etc.). If the connected gadget has resolution under 1080p, it’s better to make a connection through a receiver with a 1080p upscaler to enhance the picture quality.

Features

In this HD142x review, I’d like to note that the projector’s max resolution (1920 x 1080) doesn’t allow receiving a 4K signal. Keep in mind that some 4K players can downscale to 1080. The unit supports 3D and integrates with the DLP link and 3D active shutter glasses. The projector has a built-in speaker, but it’s also possible to turn it off and to run the audio directly out of the player into a sound system. Besides, it has a 3.5mm audio out jack to plug in a 3.5mm Bluetooth adapter and Bluetooth stereos. The sound features no distortion or rattle, but a bit of muddiness reduces speech quality.

The image is bright and sharp, the tones are natural. The picture remains clear even in the blazing sun. Nevertheless, the picture quality also depends on the output resolution of the player and video content.

The HD142x has Cinema, Vivid, Reference, and Bright modes that have some differences in brightness and colors. Please note that you can use the image settings for color temperatures ranging from warm to cold, which allows you to make the image even better. The Optoma HD142x manual helps make correct settings for the user’s needs. A Game mode brightens the screen in moderate ambient light. Besides, the unit’s latency of 32ms provides a perfect gaming experience for amateurs rather than for professional gamers.

The lamp can work for 5,000, 6,500, and 8,000 hours in Bright, Dynamic, and Eco modes, respectively. It’s recommended that you run the projector in the Eco mode during the first 500 hours of work to escape the essential loss of brightness.

Design

The dimensions of Optoma HD142x 1080p unit are 9 x 11.73 x 3.7 inches, and its weight is 5.5 pounds that allows using it in the office or on the road. This model has a fixed lens since Optoma doesn’t offer any type of external lenses to get a shorter throw ratio. The projector is fitted with a zoom slider that changes the screen size by 2 or 3% only, so, if the image is too large for a screen, it’s necessary to manually move the projector.

Conclusion

The entry-level projector is fully packed for watching videos at home, but it requires high-quality sources of both video and audio signals to produce flawless picture and sound. Good brightness and tons of settings compensate for the lack of lens shift.
