Setup

The setup flexibility of the Optoma GT1080HDR makes it appealing to most gamers who just want to set up their unit and jump into action. You can mount the projector in the ceiling or choose rear projection.

The projector's focus lever on the top has enough resistance, so you won't accidentally adjust it beyond the optimal position for your viewing distance. The picture appears crystal clear at the perfect viewing distance, but the frame's edges may be fuzzy if the lens's orientation is not aligned with the screen.

You'll find the HDMI HDCP 2.2 inputs on the projector's rear — HDMI 2.0 and v1.4. The former is compatible with 4K/60Hz and HDR. In contrast, the latter supports 4K/30Hz and MHL. There is also a power-only USB port, VGA in/out, RS-232, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Eight buttons on the projector's top allow you to access various settings and the menu via a backlit remote.

Features

The Optoma GT1080HDR short throw relies on a DLP chip with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 and a six-segment RYGCWB — yellow, cyan, red, white, green, and blue — color wheel. The white panel allows more light into the projector, contributing to the projector's high brightness. Furthermore, the white panel causes a limitation of color accuracy, but the cyan and yellow panels help make up for it. The yellow and cyan panels are also effective at achieving great-looking colors through a wide range of presets.

The lens of the Optoma GT1080HDR short throw gaming projector makes it possible to enjoy a large gaming image in even the smallest of spaces. In small to medium-sized family rooms, the 10-watt internal speaker will provide adequate sound quality, loud enough to fill the whole space. However, having a separate sound system is required for optimal audio quality.

The Optoma GT1080HDR has three color modes for 2D SDR input: Game, sRGB, and Cinema. The Game mode provides the sharpest contrast but isn’t the most color accurate. In my GT1080HDR review and tests, the sRGB offers the best color while Cinema is the second best. Also, the Cinema mode has the best balance of contrasts, black level, and sharpness for watching videos and movies.

Design

As this Optoma GT1080HDR review suggests, the short-throw gaming projector has a great design. The menu bar and focus ring are on the top of this rectangular, off-white projector. The projector's menu panel is at the rear, and the controls are on the left side of the device.

The control panel has an IR receiver consisting of eight dials in three rows and three LED lights for power, lighting, and temperature alerts. You may change the source, re-synchronize, tweak the keystone and use the onboard menu.

Since the GT1080HDR is a short-throw unit, the lens is circular and protrudes to the front. You will find an IR receiver on the right of the lens. The projector rests on three feet, one of which is fixed, and the other two are adjustable. On one side of the projector, you will find three screw mount holes for ceiling installation.

Conclusion

The Optoma GT1080HDR is an outstanding choice for home use. Its short-throw feature may be the deciding factor in choosing it. If you don't need the short throw, the other capabilities, like HDR support, will tickle your fancy.

Consider buying the GT1080HDR if you need an incredible gaming, video, and movie home projector and you value High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatibility, high brightness, and above-average brightness for 3D.
