Actually, this model is very similar to the BenQ W1080ST. They both were released in 2012 and differ only in focal length and in the number of connectors.
Setup
If you want to immediately start using the projector right after the purchase, there is nothing easier since you don't even need the BenQ W1070 manual for it. Just connect it to power and video sources, turn it on, and that's all. The projector does include a 10W mono speaker, so you don't even have to connect speakers to it.
Thanks to the 1.3x manual zoom, I was able to easily adjust the required screen size. Besides, the auto keystone provides the simplest way to adjust the image levelness.
Features
Considering the projector's price, the BenQ W1070 specs are impressive. This model is capable of throwing out a 200-inch screen and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. The projector is also able to produce up to 2000 lumens of brightness being bright enough to withstand daylight. Moreover, it has Day and Night modes. These modes are extremely useful: when using a projector, you always have to adjust brightness and contrast depending on the ambient light, but thanks to these modes, you don't have to do it.
I really like how it looks with both text and video content. The image is so clear (and the 10000:1 contrast is one of the reasons for that) that at some point I even forgot that I was testing a mid-range model. However, there is an issue with a rainbow effect that sometimes appears on light areas.
The model is also remarkable for its energy-saving features. There is an Eco Blank feature that cuts down the power consumption down to 70% by automatically dimming the lamp. This feature triggers automatically after it detects 3 minutes of no input signal but also can be activated manually when you press a dedicated button on the remote control or on the projector itself.
There is also a SmartEco mode that helps prolong the BenQ W1070 lamp life by adjusting the brightness level depending on the projected content.
The feature set and projector's performance receive 8/10 from me.
Design
The W1070 has a gray cabinet with a neutral design. The top panel contains 4 arrow buttons, Menu/Exit, Auto, Mode/Enter, Eco Blank, Source button, and, of course, a Power button.
It didn't feel heavy when I held it in my hands since it weighs less than 6 lbs. As for such a solid projector, it has a compact body: 12.28 by 4.09 by 9.61 inches.
The projector has a wide variety of inputs allowing you to connect it to several sources simultaneously and easily switch between them using a source select button. There are both component and composite video inputs, S-video, VGA, and dual HDMI ports (both 1.4a). For speakers, it includes audio L/R (RCA) inputs.
The design and connector's set are satisfying and get 10/10.
Conclusion
The BenQ W1070 projector offers a high-quality FHD image with a superior brightness level that's resistant to ambient light. However, the rainbow effect on light areas interferes with comfortable viewing at times
The setup is straightforward and the projector is generally easy to use and perform image adjustments. The range of available inputs is also good.
