The Bamboo Fun tablet from Wacom is designed for digital art creation, photo editing, drawing, and more. It has a textured surface which provides a pen-on-paper feel with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This mid-sized tablet is compatible with both Windows and MacOS.
The Bamboo Fun is compatible with a desktop computer, laptop, or Mac. Just attach it to a standard USB port, install the Wacom Bamboo Fun driver, and the tablet is ready to work. You can also customize the tablet’s four ExpressKeys to your personal needs.
One of the most remarkable Bamboo Fun specs is its intuitive Multi-Touch system which provides a convenient hands-on alternative. This means that you can navigate the tablet just like you navigate your smartphone: using your fingers. As for me, it’s a significant advantage of this tablet: scrolling, rotating, and zooming pictures with the help of your fingers are much more convenient than doing it with a pen. Besides, this is a great function for the beginners who are not yet familiar with how to use a drawing tablet pen.
However, the pen is better for precise work. The provided ergonomically-designed stylus has 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity which is enough for convenient, multipurpose usage — from handwriting to wide-brush painting. When you use the pen, the screen automatically recalibrates for a more accurate drawing experience. The pen is also battery-free and features an easy-to-grip design for increased convenience and better control over the drawing. Plus, the pen-input technology makes writing, doodling, and embellishing much easier.
The tablet can be configured for left- or right-hand users so the left-handers don’t have to adapt for working in an uncomfortable position. The opposite tip of the pen is used as an eraser.
Note that the tablet’s active area decreases from 8.5 x 5.4 inches up to 7.5 x 5.1 inches when you use it in touch mode. Plus, if you prefer working with a smaller area, you can also configure the tablet to use only a portion of the working area.
Additionally, the manufacturer managed to add a bunch of visual editing software (Adobe Photoshop Elements, Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0, etc.) in the provided installation CD, so you don’t have to buy them separately. The installation CD also includes useful interactive tutorials for beginners and user's manual.
However, if you need more editing software, the Bamboo Dock (Wacom‘s software application) allows downloading a lot of custom-built applications. For example, a Drawtweet app which allows making a quick doodle or sketch and then sharing the content on Twitter.
The Wacom Bamboo Fun goes in silver color. The four customizable touch buttons are located along the side of the tablet. Having 13.3 x 8.8 x 0.2 inches in size, this tablet gives a lot of working space that will probably be enough even for large projects. However, it still thin and light (2.85 pounds) enough so you can easily carry it in a laptop case. There is also a simple pen holder in the form of a loop attached to the side of the tablet.
This Bamboo Fun review shows that this tablet is a versatile tool for both professionals and beginners since you can navigate it whether with the stylus or with your fingertips. The variety of possible applications is a plus: this tablet is suitable for photographers, retouchers, graphic artists, and office workers who prefer physical writing to typing. The provided pen is particularly good for drawings sketches and photo editing.
